2017: What Happened "A Call to Action in 2018"
Now that 2017 is behind us and 2018 has begun, what lessons can we learn from the past year? What happened to the nation we knew and loved? And what must every one of us do this year to ensure that 2018 will be an excellent year for ourselves, our loved ones and our nation as a whole? This article will attempt to answer the questions many of us are asking.
2017 was a year of challenges, battles, and a president who still to this day attempt to undermine our nation’s founding principles set forth by our our founding fathers. So perhaps the most significant lessons we can learn from the past year is that we are in fact stronger together than we are apart. Even though 2017 was not the year many of us saw coming and we saw some horrific things happen in our nation and the world, we also saw some amazingly beautiful things happen as well.
We saw the Women’s March take place where an estimated 1 million marchers stood up for women’s rights in Washington DC, with another estimated 2 to 3 million more around the U.S. The Women's March was a worldwide protest on January 21, 2017, to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women's rights, immigration reform, healthcare and more.
We saw the start of the #MeToo movement, a social media movement. Where women and men spoke out about sexual assault, which went viral after actress Alyssa Milano shared it on Twitter. The movement reached dozens of countries and millions of people. Twitter even confirmed to CBS News that over 1.7 million tweets included the hashtag MeToo posted as of Oct 24, 2017.
If you were to ask me what happened to the nation we knew and loved, I would say that in 2017 we saw the vision of our country reborn and that 2017 might have been just what we needed to get our country back. In the years before 2017, we had grown too comfortable under an administration who stood with us and supported us. We forgot that to be the great nation, we are destined and capable of being that it takes all of us standing together for the good of one another, that we are all each other's keepers and that if one of us is hurting then the whole nation is hurting.
So what must every one of us do this year to ensure that 2018 will be a great year for ourselves, our loved ones and our nation as a whole? We must not let the momentum of love, respect for one another, resistance against those who wish to take away the rights of our citizens end in 2017. We must keep the love for our fellow man, woman, children, transgender brothers and sisters, non-binary people and our nation in our hearts and we must never let that passion die again. We must continue to fight for full equality where all citizens can say that the Preamble of The Constitution of the United States:
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America,”
and all laws speaks for all of us and not just those of privilege. We must remember at the end of every day that we are and will always be country united by love, compassion, and unity, with our diversity being our greatest strength of all! So let 2018 be the start of something we knew once long ago and let us together take our country back with love one day at a time.
