Summer Self Care

Summer is here! That means it's time for sun, fun and looking after number one (aka you).

  • Make Sure to Continue Any Therapeutic Work

If you cannot see your usual therapist because summer means travelling elsewhere for a long period of time, make sure to either schedule with another professional and/or explore the many apps that can help you through your healing process or with learning to live your condition/mental illness. You can also try alternative means of speaking with your therapist via phone or even Skype or even taking a break from therapy if you feel as if you need to.

  • Get Outside/Out of The House

Summer is a great time to get out and play sports or hang out with friends in the sunshine. However, if either of those things makes you uncomfortable, just ensure that you don’t spend all summer cooped up inside. Whether it be taking the dog for a walk, doing any school work outside in the sun (wear sunscreen btw), going to the gym (even if it’s just for a leisurely walk on the treadmill), anything to make sure you have something different in your routine.

  • Get into a Schedule

Speaking of routine, make sure you have some kind of schedule with your summer activities, it will make you feel more organised and active.

  • Drink plenty of water and maintain a healthy diet (seriously).

Although it is summer, make sure you keep up that H2O, and those veggies and lean meats. It’s alright to have some sweets (hey, it’s summer) but remember to look after your physical health too.

  • Make sure you maintain a sleep schedule

I know it’s tempting to stay up late all night and sleep until 3 pm, but a good night’s sleep is proven to improve your mindset and mental health.

  • Get an internship/job, take a summer class or volunteer

It helps to keep yourself busy, so learning something new or getting a summer job will certainly help keep that routine. Remember, though, it’s summer, so remember to give yourself time to relax.

  • Take time for yourself, doing whatever YOU want.

We spend a lot of time negotiating our time to make everyone else happy. Take time for yourself, take yourself to a movie (yes, there’s nothing wrong with going to a movie alone) or out to eat.

  • Remember You Are Not Alone

There are many people who unfortunately aren’t in the best home situation, so summer may not be the happiest of times. Remember to look after yourself, get help, talk to people you trust about any issues and don't be afraid to reach out to authorities if you feel as if you are in an unsafe environment. Many people go through difficult home situations so remember you are not alone and that things will get better.

That aside, look after yourself and have a wonderful summer everybody!
