Are You Weird?

There is not a single soul in the world that hasn’t been called weird at least ten times in their life. The human race is not meant to be “perfect” like society preaches to us. Always have your hair brushed, always have makeup on, always look presentable going out into public, always like the same stuff as everyone else, don’t stray from the path of the picture perfect society or everyone will think you are weird. Also, what even is this definition of perfect? Well according to google it’s, “having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be.” I don’t know about you guys, but I think that’s LAME. Why should we all want to be perfect? If all 7.7 billion of us were “perfect” then we would all be exactly the same boring people. But, here is the kicker, if we aren’t “perfect” we are “weird.” If we, so help us, step off the path that society has laid out then, oh no, you get the all caps branding on your forehead of not being the same as everyone else.

Be yourself. That's all that we can ask from each other. We all live busy lives where we don't have time for the fakeness and the lies that people wear just to seek other's approval. So to you, the person reading this, no matter your gender or the stereotype fitted to it, be truthful to yourself. Do not change just to fit society's standards. Do not change to impress others. Do not change to hide the real you that's buried down below. If you want to go to Target with no makeup and in your pajamas, do it. If you would rather go get a greasy cheeseburger than going to the new sushi restaurant all of the city is going to, do it. If you want to sit in your room and read books instead of going to a party, do it. Start doing what you want to do and not what others think you should do. So what if I go into Walmart at 2:00 AM in my Sonic the Hedgehog PJ pants and an old ripped up baggy shirt to look for oreos? Even though I was stared at the whole time I got my damn oreos so who is the real winner? Me, because little did you know those are my favorite PJ pants and I really don't care what the Walmart employees think of me at 2:00 AM. I'm weird am I right?

Have you ever been called weird for what makes you happy? I definitely have and I stopped telling people what my hobbies are, what music I like, and a lot of the stuff that makes me happy because it’s not “normal” in the “perfect” stereotype. (Side note: Stereotypes weren’t ever cool so let’s not use them anymore, okay? Okay.) But, the thing is, I’m not scared of those labels anymore. I’m not afraid to share what makes me completely happy anymore. Because if you won’t accept a perfectly un-perfect weird girl that is me into your life, well that just means that I shouldn’t be in it anyways. Through expressing my love for astronomy, astrology, K-POP music, anime, my not so slight obsession with the boy-band BTS, the romantic/drama filled manga comics on Webtoon, and digitally drawing five or more hours out of my day; I would have never found people around me that share the same interests as me. But, before I was uncomfortable with sharing all this because now there is the all caps “weird” branding on my forehead. So go ahead and call me the weird weeb girl, because that’s the stereotype isn’t it? Or actually, call me the girl who no longer wants to abide by society’s picture perfect rules that produces that “weird” definition. I no longer feel like my "weird" liking's should be hidden privately in my room where no one knows the true, happy me. Why should we lie and hide the realest and best things about ourselves?

We are all out there in a maze of finding and owning what makes us truly happy. At least that is what I thought before. We are actually in a labyrinth, finding ourselves more and more with every path we choose. Choosing what makes you happy in life. Choosing what brings you laughter and tears of joy. Being confident in what you love. Always standing up for yourself and being proud of who you are. Because all of those “weird” things that make you smile from ear to ear is what makes you the perfectly un-perfect human you are. We only get one life in this world, so please, make it the happiest one no matter what you enjoy.

“Freedom is in being weird,

Servitude is in being normal.”
