Doors Closing: Friendships & Relationships

February 26, 2019

“When a door closes, knock on it a few times. But if it still doesn’t open, let it stay closed. In career, in love, in life - when you see the period at the end of a sentence, don’t try and turn it into a comma. Know when something is over and move on.” -Anonymous

Life. It opens doors and closes them as well. Sometimes we don’t understand why and we feel like it’s unfair, well, that’s life. It’s very ironic. We need to feel sadness to understand what is happiness. We need to have doors close to appreciate the doors that open.

It always hurts to lose a friend or two. Someone who has always had your back and been a shoulder to cry on. Someone who is your Hannah Montana song singing car ride buddy. It always hurts to lose your significant other no matter the situation. Your plus one on the Friday night dinner dates. Your Netflix watching/couch cuddling partner in crime. A person you could rely and trust to point you in the right direction.

Sometimes there are good reasons for why we lose our friendships and relationships. Sometimes there isn’t a reason that seems even feasible. No one in the world can give you the exact reason why doors close and doors open, that’s just life doing one thing it does best - showing you that there is more. Life closes doors on you so that new opportunities and new people can come into your life a fill the holes. There has even been times when you, not life, has had to close the door. That’s when you turn around and look for the new doors in your life appearing right before you.

Always listen and understand with your heart. Which way do you think you should go? Should you knock on the door once more or move on? Chances are with doors closing, they will not reopen unless it’s for the good. Once you listen to your heart you begin to understand why these doors closed, like a relationship not being compatible enough for the future or a friendship turning toxic. Yes, when it happens it hurts and isn’t any fun to think about. Friends come and go, the realest ones stay with you. Relationships fail until you have found the right person. It may seem like you’ll never find the right person or you’re always wondering why your friends leave, but the one thought that should always be on your mind is that you will rise up and down the road everything will be okay. I can not stress this enough. Doors closing may seem like the end and the may shatter your hope for a brighter tomorrow. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or next week, or even a month from then, but one day you will realize why these situations happened and stand tall facing the new doors opening right ahead of you.

Next time a door closes, it’s okay to stress, but don’t dwell in it too long. Doors close because it no longer leads to the path you thought it would be. Doors close because sometimes the next open door holds something far better like friends, love, and the rest of life. Consider the fact that the reason the door closed is because you worth more than what was on the other side. Let go of the closed doors and turn your head to the ones held open.

“There are far better things ahead than anything we leave behind.” - C.S. Lewis
